Betty Jackson King dedicated her celebrated piano work “Four Seasonal Sketches” to Dr. Geneva Handy Southall (1925–2004) — a pioneering musicologist, pianist, and the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in piano performance. Southall was also a leading scholar of Blind Tom Wiggins and invited King to lecture her students at the University of Minnesota in 1981.
